About Strength From Within

Building confidence from the inside out

SD holiday club.jpeg

Strength From Within brings together two things I care deeply about: helping people feel safer and more confident, and helping people connect with nature.

Through Strength Defence® and John’s in the Garden, I provide practical, down-to-earth activities that encourage confidence, wellbeing and a greater awareness of ourselves and the world around us.

They might seem like two very different things.

But for me, they have much more in common than you might think.

About Me

Hi, I’m John

I’ve spent more than 25 years training in karate and over 15 years teaching children, teenagers and adults.

I’m a 4th Dan in Goju-Ryu karate, and over the years I’ve become increasingly interested in a simple question:

What actually helps an ordinary person feel safer and more confident in the real world?

That question eventually led me to develop Strength Defence.

Rather than teaching people how to fight, I wanted to concentrate on practical self-protection: awareness, communication, movement, protecting your space and having simple options when something goes wrong.

But martial arts and self-defence are only one side of who I am.

I’ve also had a lifelong interest in the outdoors, gardening, wildlife and photography.

I hold a Diploma in Garden Design and spend a lot of my spare time looking for, photographing and learning about the wildlife around us.

That passion became John’s in the Garden.

For me, Strength From Within is about doing something I genuinely enjoy and sharing the things I’ve learned and become passionate about over the years.

Whether I’m helping someone become more confident in protecting themselves, discovering wildlife with a group , or simply spotting something unexpected while working in a garden, I love seeing people gain confidence, learn something new and perhaps look at themselves or the world around them a little differently.

Strength From Within feels like a natural next chapter for me — bringing together years of teaching, martial arts and a love of wildlife and the outdoors.

I want to keep learning, keep developing what I do and, most importantly, enjoy sharing it with others.

If someone comes away from an experience with me feeling a little more confident, curious or inspired than when they arrived, then I feel I’ve achieved something worthwhile.
